Dr. John & Audrey Dimitry Scholarship

The Dr. John & Audrey Dimitry Scholarship is awarded in honor of former Northern Essex Community College President Dr. John R. Dimitry for his twenty and one half years of service. At the age of seventeen, President Dimitry chose to withdraw from high school and enlist in the United States Army. While in the service he earned his GED certificate, and upon his discharge in 1948 he earned a bachelor’s degree. He subsequently served in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 when he was called to active duty. After the war, he earned his masters and doctoral degrees and began his lifetime career in education. From “high school dropout” to community college president, John Dimitry’s life shows that learning comes in many forms, and that it’s a lifelong adventure and opportunity that each person pursues in their own fashion at their own pace. This scholarship is awarded to a GED graduate with a 3.0 GPA or higher, at least 9 NECC credits earned and at least 6 credits registered for the upcoming fall semester. The student should also be involved in campus activities/clubs or be involved in community leadership or service.
